Source

The winter sports data in Snow Compass (slopes, cross-country trails, activity routes, lifts and gondolas, lift stations, peaks, huts and ski areas) is taken from OpenStreetMap, the free map of the world built by volunteers.

Regional extracts were downloaded from Geofabrik GmbH. The base map in the app (standard, satellite, hybrid) is Apple Maps and is separate from this data; the files below contain no Apple map data.

License

OpenStreetMap data is licensed under the Open Data Commons Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0. The regional winter sports files used by Snow Compass are derivative databases within the meaning of the ODbL and are made available under the same license. Rights in individual contents are licensed under the Database Contents License (DbCL) 1.0.

The ODbL applies only to this data. The rest of the app (program code, design, texts) is not covered by it.

If you use these files, please credit “© OpenStreetMap contributors”, link to openstreetmap.org/copyright and share any database you derive from them under the ODbL as well.

Where you see it in the app

• Every map that shows winter sports data carries the notice “Winter sports data © OpenStreetMap contributors · ODbL” with a link to the OpenStreetMap copyright page.
• Settings › Information › “Data & License” shows source, license, processing, where to get the data and the data date of every region.

How the data was processed

• Only winter sports objects were taken: downhill pistes, connections, cross-country trails, ski touring ascents, winter hiking trails, snowshoe trails, sledding runs, snow parks, ice skating routes, fat bike and snowkite routes, snowmobile and sleigh routes, lifts with their stations, ski areas, plus peaks, mountain passes and alpine huts.
• Deliberately excluded are restaurants, accommodation, car parks, public transport stops, petrol stations, toilets, ski schools, ski rental, snow cannons and other general places.
• Lines are simplified for display (deviation below 10 meters).
• Each object keeps its OpenStreetMap ID, so it can be traced back to the original.
• The data is stored in a compact binary format (version 3), split into 36 regions. The format is described in the GitHub repository.

Found a mistake in a slope or lift? Please fix it directly in OpenStreetMap; the improvement will be in a later data update and helps everyone who uses the map. The data may be incomplete or out of date and says nothing about whether a slope or lift is open. It replaces neither the signs on site nor avalanche or safety information.
